Upper limb orthotics
Upper-extremity orthoses can support, protect, position or improve function of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.
Upper-extremity orthoses are used for musculoskeletal problems resulting from trauma, sports and work-related injuries, as well as neurologic conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury and peripheral nerve injury. They may also be used in arthritic conditions.
Static orthoses
Static orthoses limit motion and provide rigid support. They may be used for fractures, inflammatory conditions involving tendons and soft tissue, nerve injuries and other situations in which protection or immobilization is needed.
Dynamic and functional orthoses
Dynamic orthoses permit or assist motion. They are commonly used to support weak muscles and improve functional movement. Some designs incorporate dual or bilateral mechanisms to provide controlled tension and accommodate changes in muscle tone or spasm.
