Spinal orthotics
Spinal orthoses are external devices designed to limit motion, correct or accommodate deformity, reduce axial loading or improve function.
Spinal orthoses are named according to the regions of the spine they span. Examples include cervical orthoses (CO) and cervicothoracolumbosacral orthoses (CTLSO).
Common indications
- Pain management
- Mechanical unloading
- Scoliosis management
- Spinal immobilization following surgery
- Spinal immobilization after traumatic injury
- Compression-fracture management
- Kinesthetic reminders to avoid certain movements
Preparing for your appointment: If you are being fit with a KAFO or long-leg brace, it is helpful to wear or bring shorts so the area can be evaluated and fitted appropriately.
Your orthotist will communicate relevant findings to your physician along with a recommendation for the type of orthosis intended to serve your goals, expectations and abilities.
