Pro-bono humanitarian work

Orthopedic Arts regularly contributes prosthetic expertise, components and clinical time to communities where access to quality artificial limbs is limited.

Orthopedic Arts has engaged in humanitarian prosthetic work in countries where quality artificial-limb services are difficult to access. Our work has included missions to Belize and exploratory missions to Cuba and Costa Rica, as well as providing pro-bono services to amputees from impoverished areas who are able to travel to our Brooklyn location.

Belize

Belize has historically had limited access to prosthetic facilities, and many amputees have faced significant financial and travel barriers to receiving appropriate care. Dr. Stephan Manucharian traveled to Belize on several missions to donate clinical time and prosthetic components.

The first two missions were carried out with Project Hope Belize (Sonrie Ministries). During the 2004 mission, Dr. Manucharian and a small clinical team fitted 21 limbs for 19 patients, most without charge. During the 2006 mission, Dr. Manucharian, Ronald Gluck, RPT, Stephen Mall, PT, and Don Pfau, technician, fitted 24 amputees of various levels with modern prostheses completely free of charge.

Ukraine

Since the Russia-Ukraine war began in 2022, Orthopedic Arts, in collaboration with Kind Deeds, has donated clinical time and expertise to help service amputee Ukrainian soldiers. According to our records, approximately 50 individuals have been successfully fitted.

Our philosophy: Humanitarian prosthetic work is an extension of the same principles that guide our clinical practice—careful assessment, appropriate technology, thoughtful fitting and respect for every patient.
