What to expect during prosthetic fitting
From your first evaluation to delivery and follow-up, our goal is to make the process clear, collaborative and comfortable.
Evaluation
We discuss your lifestyle, vocation, hobbies, plans and expectations, then assess strength, range of motion and residual-limb condition.
Measurements & Impression
We measure the residual and sound limbs and take an impression when needed to create a precise model for fabrication.
Test Fitting
A temporary or clear test socket may be used to evaluate fit, comfort and alignment before final fabrication.
Delivery
Your finished device is adjusted, aligned and reviewed. We explain operation, care, maintenance and a gradual wearing schedule.
Follow-Up
We provide adjustments and minor repairs and encourage you to contact us whenever fit or function changes.
Evaluation
At the evaluation, your prosthetist will ask questions about your lifestyle, vocation, hobbies, future plans and expectations. If you have used a prosthesis before, please bring it with you. We will evaluate strength, range of motion and the condition of the residual limb and communicate our findings and recommendations to your physician as appropriate.
Your device recommendation may also be forwarded to your insurance carrier for financial verification. Some carriers may take several weeks to reach a decision. Before proceeding, our financial coordinator can review the recommended device and your expected financial responsibility with you.
Measurement and impression-taking
At the next visit, your prosthetist may take measurements of the residual and sound limbs and an impression using plaster or another appropriate casting material. Please wear or bring clothing that allows access to the residual limb. If needed, disposable garments can be provided.
Fitting your prosthesis
Several fittings may be necessary to achieve an appropriate socket fit and alignment. A clear test socket may be used to identify areas requiring modification. Your feedback about comfort and fit is an important part of this process.
Once the socket fit is satisfactory, the prosthetic components are attached and alignment is assessed. For lower-limb prostheses, bring the shoes you plan to use with the device. Small alignment adjustments are made while you stand and walk, with assistance when necessary.
Delivery
When your finished prosthesis is ready, we review its operation, care and maintenance and establish an initial wearing schedule. Follow the safety recommendations of your prosthetist and therapist. If you notice persistent redness, pain or discomfort, stop wearing the device and contact us for reassessment.
Follow-up and repairs
Prostheses require ongoing attention as your body, activity level and components change. Contact your prosthetist if the socket begins fitting differently or if components become worn or stop functioning properly.
