What to expect during orthotic fitting

Evaluation

Your orthotist will ask about your lifestyle, vocation, hobbies, future plans and expectations. If you have used an orthotic device previously, please bring it with you. We will evaluate strength and range of motion and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

The recommendation may be forwarded to your insurance carrier for financial verification. Coverage decisions can take several weeks. Before fabrication or delivery, our financial coordinator can review the recommended device and expected financial responsibility with you.

Measurement and impression-taking

For many orthotic devices, measurements or an impression can be taken during the evaluation. Depending on the device, plaster or fiberglass may be used. Your orthotist will use the measurements and impression to fabricate the orthosis.

Depending on the device, final fitting and delivery generally take place within one to two weeks. If a different fabrication or fitting process is required, your orthotist will explain it in advance.

Fitting and delivery

Your orthotist will fit the device, perform final trimming and shaping, and observe its function when appropriate. Small adjustments may be made to optimize comfort and function. You will receive instructions on use, care, maintenance and the initial wearing schedule.

Follow-up and repairs

Contact your orthotist if the device begins fitting differently or if any component is worn or not functioning properly. Follow the wearing schedule and safety recommendations provided by your orthotist and physical therapist. If you notice persistent redness or discomfort, stop wearing the device and contact us for reassessment.
