Humanitarian Work

Orthopedic Arts on a regular basis engages in pro-bono humanitarian work in countries that are in desperate need for quality artificial limbs. For example, there aren’t any prosthetic facilities in Belize, Central America; most amputees do not have insurance to cover the high cost of artificial limbs; and those lucky who do, must travel to the neighboring Mexico for sub-par services. Stephan Manucharian, CP traveled several times to Belize to donate his time and prosthetic components in an effort to make a difference in the lives of the amputees who otherwise would have no chance to return to the society as physically able individuals. First two missions were accomplished with Project Hope Belize (Sonrie Ministries), a not-for-profit organization.

In the 2004 mission Stephan Manucharian, CP together with two other practitioners and one technician fitted 21 limbs for 19 patients, most of them free of charge.

In the 2006 mission Stephan Manucharian, CP, Ronald Gluck, RPT, Stephen Mall, PT and Don Pfau, Technician fitted 24 amputees of various levels of amputation with modern prostheses completely free of charge. Stephan Manucharian, CP also traveled to Cuba and Costa Rica with explorative missions to assess the need for artificial limbs in those countries. Additionally, we provide pro-bono services to amputees from impoverished areas of the world who are able to find a way to travel to our Brooklyn location.

Currently, in collaboration with KindDeeds, we donate our time and expertise in fitting wounded Ukrainian soldiers with modern prostheses (www.https://kinddeeds.org).

Insurance

Our staff will be glad to discuss your insurance coverage and what services may or may not be covered. We will also assist you in obtaining a letter of medical necessity from your physician. This is required by law and adhered to by our staff. We accept Medicare, Medicaid (New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania) and most other insurance carriers. If you don’t have insurance, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan that will fit your budget.
